Polishing / Sanding Grits
400 Grit:
Coarse grade.
Used for heavy material removal, shaping, and rough sanding. Be careful using this grit especially on lacquered surfaces.
Suitable for smoothing out rough surfaces, and preparing surfaces for finer sanding.
A good starting point if the frets are heavily scratchy. You feel it when sliding the string on the fret or moving the tip of your fingernail over the fret
800 Grit:
Medium-coarse grade.
Effective for smoothing and refining surfaces after initial rough sanding or if the surfaces is in a quite good shape. Be sensitive using this grit on lacquered surfaces.
Helps to remove scratches left by coarser grits and prepares the surface for finer polishing.
A good starting point for slightly scratchy frets. You feel and hear it when bending a string on the frets.
Brand new low to medium priced guitars can have scratchy frets.
1500 Grit:
Medium-fine grade.
Ideal for first polishing stages.
Removes finer scratches from previous grits and further refines the surface, preparing it for a smoother finish.
A good starting point for dull and oxidized frets. You can also try 3.000 grit before and check the result
